You are here: ![]() Panning for Gold with a Batea
Now, here is a terrific example of using a batea gold pan. These placer miners from the Phillipines are panning for gold using a very well worn smaller sized metal batea gold pan to separate their gold from the material they have taken out of their sluice box. Notice the lack of riffles in the sluice and how slowly the water is run through the box. Now, the beginning of this video starts out slow, but watch as the man very skillfully separates the powder gold from the heavier material. These guy would probably like to get their hands on one of the more modern plasic pans, but skill with a gold pan requires practice, no mater what type of gold pan you use. I was fascinated by the technique and skill this man uses with the batea gold pan. The batea does not separate as quickly as some othe gold pans do, but in the right hands it is a truly efficent tool. Bateas are used by many of the European competition gold panners and do very well in the competitions. The batea classifies very quickly to the bottom of the pan, but users lose time separating the flakes from the black sand. Other pans classify slower, but separae faster in the right hands. All in all, a very nice video on the use of a gold pan, and the equipment used in the sluicing was very interesting as well. for more information on gold panning and prospecting visit www.hookedongold.com.
